Introduction:

As with most of the How to articles the first question is always why. In this case its again to do with a modified engine. A modified engine which runs at around 12500 to 13000 RPM vibrates something awful. Unless you do something to deal with this problem you are going to crack your engine frame, chassis or mounting points. The first to go is normally the weld points on the frame. They start developing cracks. One option is to weld up this area and reinforce it. But the cracks will be back sooner or later. Hence this conversion of rubber mounting the RD engine.

Steps:

It would help if you had the engine casing in two half's but its not necessary. You will need to remove the engine from the frame for this Mod though.

The mounting points on the front half of the engine need to be drilled out to 19.5mm. If you use a 19mm Drill bit you will land up with a bore of 19.5mm. Unless you use a very accurate Mill or imported drill. Keep checking as you drill to be safe.

Make sure that the depth of the hole drilled does not exceed 17mm or the height of the bush you are using. You will also notice the hole has been offset with a thicker portion on top because the load falls more to the top.

You need to find a right sized Bush both for the inner dia. and the outer dia. which will work with your stock Nuts and bolts used to mount the engine.

This is the Bush used

  • Inside Dia:8mm
  • Outside Dia:20mm
  • Height: 17mm

The remaining 0.5mm has been removed manually to ensure the bush is a tight fit in the engine casing. The bush should sit in the engine case after a few whacks from a lead hammer. This is how it looks inserted into the case.

You will need to fit rubber bushes for the mounting points on all four mounting holes in the front of the engine.

For the rear only mount the bushes on the bottom of the engine. As getting a right sized bush to fit in the mounting point near the RPM gear is tricky and could damage the RPM gear. Besides which if the front and bottom of the engine is rubber mounted vibrations are cut down by over 70%.
