Analogue / Digital
News:
After completing 7 years and selling thousands of kits around the world. The RDD CDI has seen many many changes and improvements over the years. We started out with simple Analogue Ignitions. And today each kit is shipped with state of the art Digital Ignition with multiple maps and many innovative worlds first features such as wasted spark being removed.
Our ignitions have proved. That it is possible to increase power, and mileage and engine life all at the same time. And we are not talking off tiny little improvements off 3-5% here. Read what people have to say and results from around the world CLICK HERE:
History:
Here is a brief history of the kit and the major revisions.
1999: First kit that offered 90/100 lighting. Analogue CDI + HT coil combo units. CDI Units where from India Nippon. Good for stock RDs. Suffered from weak spark on high comp tuned RDs.
2001: First performance Analogue CDI built and developed by RDD with two separate HT coils. Released to address the issue of weak spark on highly modified engines.
2003: First Digital Ignition built and developed by RDD. Featured static timing. Wasted spark removed. So the capacitor is charged twice but discharged only once. For a huge jump in spark energy.
2004: Digital II. Which had dynamic timing. Tacho signal out. Two maps that could be picked via a TPS or a regular switch. One was static full advance and one was dynamic.
2005: Introduction of the fully programmable Ignition with too many features to list here. See Programmable Ignition web page. Digital Programmable this needs to be ordered separately. No longer in production.
2005: Introduction of the DC based Ignitions for the RZ350 / Banshee / LC350 / TZR250. Using ferrite cores it was now possible to ensure a steady 400-500 volts a/c to the Caps at all RPMs. vs the stock 150-200 volts generated by the source coils.
2006: We have been busy working on the Digital III. Slated for release in early Jan 2007. We have added more features. And worked with RDD kit owners around the world to further refine an excellent package.
Our kits have always been popular. But we have refused to rest on our laurels and work 24x7 towards improving the kit and offering the best value to our customers.
2007: Digital III released, Features 3 maps. Digital Tacho out +12 Volt square wave output. Option for TPS / map sensor to switch maps. Custom curves for your application. Two rev limits. One by backing off the timing to fire at TDC and two by killing spark beyond 13500 RPM.
2007 (March): Digital III and IIIa released. Digital Curve Revision 8. New Automotive couplers on CDI. TZR and RZ CDIs get improved Ferite cores for higher output. New Digital CDIs released for Indian 4 Stroke Bikes.

Spark strength (Video / Click Here) (Analogue CDI / Digital is better)
Read about the people and bikes that use our kit / Feedback:
Features:
A complete upgrade of all your electrical components.
Half the total weight
Double the Output
No need to run a battery for race apps. Plus you get 100W halogens.
Note this is not a Points replacement system. If you just want to loose your points. We would recommend a Martek or Newtronics kit. The fact that the kit does away with your old points system is only incidental.
Offers Static Curve or Dynamic Curve based on C.D.I sold with kit.
Simplifies your complete electrical setup.
Offer to build and burn custom timing curves at no extra cost.
Reduces pollution put out by bike. See lab results scaned and posted on the forum.
People who where getting 14 Km/Ltr now report getting over 25 Km/ Ltr. Again see what the customers are saying. As it much more important than any sales BS I can put up as the manufacturer of the kit. CLICK HERE:
Differences:
|
Our Kit |
Points Replacements |
| Allows you to run with out a battery for race apps. Your spark strength is much more stronger because basic input voltage to HT coils is much more. | The battery was always the weakest link in the RD electrical system. Requires a battery in good working order to start the bike. Your spark strength is limited to the input voltage the HT coils are feed. In this case its 12 Volts DC |
| Allows you to run up to 100W halogen bulb for better visibility and safety at night. Even without a Battery. | Still stuck with stock 35W headlight bulb. Or you could run a 55Watt and play Russian roulette with your Bat. |
| Complete upgrade of Electrical system, New RR Unit, New Yamaha loom, New Switch cluster, New Flasher, New clutch lever, New clutch lever yoke, New 2-Pole flasher. New HT Coils with CDI | Only replaces points. No RR unit, Harness, switches etc. |
| Once fitted will outlast the life of the bike. As your getting brand net RR. HT coils, Harness, switch cluster etc. | Have to still worry about spares like HT coils, RR unit, Harness, switch clusters etc. |
| More than doubles strength of spark at plug. | Does not change strength of spark. Cant match power of spark. |
| Variable timing curve which is getting rave reviews. Guaranteed to boost your midrange and over rev. | Static timing which everybody knows is absurd on any motor 2stroke or 4stroke. |

The kit project has turned out to be a Linux like project. Where a number of people have played a pivotal role in evolving the kit and fine tuning it. I am embarrassed when people refer to it as the Chinoy C.D.I kit. And would much prefer it if people just called it the 100Watt Yamaha Digital Upgrade.
Please don't feel upset if I have left out your name. Just mail me and Ill pop it in.
Joe for taking the time to explain the wiring circuits of every Jap bike in India. John Roadinser, Tim. Based on their valuable feedback we have made two revisions to the coil plate and changes to the harness. Doubling the output from the CDI. Mr. Ravi Nagesh for help with the Magnetic Drum.
Note:
We run a special forum for the CDI kit customers. To access this forum sign up for a free account on www.rddreams.com then mail us your ID. This service is free of cost for all CDI kit customer new or old.
The C.D.I owners section that has a wealth of information and pictures for installation, trouble shooting and setup. Also please mail in your bike pictures.
Warranty:
We reserve to the right to make changes to the kit. In keeping with International norms we do not offer any warranty implied or otherwise on electrical items. There is no warranty against Physical damage to the kit. Also returning the kit over such distances is not easy or possible so please ask as many questions as you want. Or for an many referrals as you need. We are not in a position to offer refunds once the kit is sold. Each kit is tested before being sent out.
WARNING:
With the first 100 kits we sent out which where pretty crude by most standards we never had a single complaint. In fact the comments you see above are from our first two customers. Since then the kit has undergone over 100 improvements. Yet we are finding that some people are having a frustrating time installing the kit. We fail to understand this. i.e. why the first 100 kits which where crude went on without any problems and now people are having problems with the much improved kit. The only thing possible is the Hype that has built around the kit. Hence we are adding this warning that the kit needs to be professionally installed. If you are not familiar with working on Engines and wires. Please do not plan to install the kit.. Please arrange for it to be professionally installed. Even though we have tried our best to make sure everything plugs in there still may be the odd wire than needs to be spliced together or connector mismatch. Also there is no difference between the RD350 and RD400 kit. Hence our harness does not have a wire for the oil warning light.
Note Added 25-July-2004:
Digial CDI is now RD universal.
Matt Parks reports. Installing the kit on RD200s requires special washers. And new holes to be drilled on the brass plate. We don't recommend the kit for RD200 owners unless they are willing to undertake this work.
Why cant I use my old coils with kit.
Because the old coils whether stock or performance coils where designed to work with D/C voltage. A/C HT coils are constructed differently. See here.
It sounds too good to be true so much stuff so cheap
We get this a lot. Well its not too good to be true. If your serious we can
give you referrals of people around the world who are running these
kits. The only difference is that we are not looking to make a killing on
margins with this product. Like our site its more a helpful service to RD
owners.
What about Quality?
None of the customers have reported any Quality issues. Nearly every new
customer is willing to offer referrals be a reference.
You say this is not a points replacement system. Does this mean I still need to run points or buy a Newtronics / Martek kit.
No you don't need CB points or a any other kit because the kit replaces the
points. Its a single kit to take care of all electrical issues.
With this kit wont I be needing a new Regulator and rectifier?
Yes and we include it as part of the kit.
Can I fit this to my Kawasaki / Suzuki or X Bike
Yes this kit will work on any motorcycle. That has a crank end sticking out
one side of the Case. The only part you will need to change is the base
plate. And maybe machine the Mag drum cam. Both of which are jobs anybody
with a machine shop can do for you in under an hour.
If your crank end looks anything like this it will probably go right on. The same kit can be used for Single Cylinder and twin cylinder bikes.
Can I change when the Advance / Retard Kicks in.
Yes you can but you will need to change your base timings i.e. instead of
2mm BTDC you will need to set it to 1.8 BTDC. This would depend on which Kit
you have. Some has advance built in some are static at all RPMs.
How about replacements if something fails.?
We are so sure that nothing will fail that we offer a lifetime replacement
policy on any component for 10$, A brand new RR unit or Digital CDI for 10$ how's that for a
deal. You have to mail in the defective part though. We now have a USA
Distributor who you can call and order the kit or parts from.
Can I keep my Original Coils.
No see post above A/C and D/C coils.
How do I set the timing.
You will need a timing gun to set it. The markers need to line up. Its just
like setting the timing on your Car. Mails us for the Timing Document.
How hard is it to install the kit.
We have simplified the installation as the kit has evolved. It can now be
done in under an hour. Though if you have a non standard RD there are
minor issues that may need to be sorted out. i.e. some RD350s have a
locating pin at 7'O-clock you will need to grind this out. Or drill a hole
in the brass plate.
What if I want to revert back to my points?
Before installing this kit you will need to remove all your old electrical's.
And set them aside. If you want to revert you just put everything back on.
But we have never heard of anybody who has opted to revert back in all the
years we have sold the kit.
What do I do with all the old electrical stuff.?
You can store it as a backup. Or sell it on ebay.
Why are the prices changing.
The reason for the price changes are due to the changes in the kit. As the kit evolves the prices change. We are also making changes to the CDI circuit to keep improving output. Each time we make a new PCB we pay huge ammount simplly because we use state of the art CNC drilling, and world class PCB manufacturers. This is not something made in somebody's shed. Look at the quality of the PCB and components. All the floating currency rates and DHL who have kept increasing their rates over the years. We make as much profit on a kit today as we did when we started out 6 years ago.
My friend bought a kit from you but the timing is static.
So far all the kits we have sent out has gone out with the static timing curve. This has changed with effect 1-April-2004.
Can I have a look at the curve you provide on the new Digital
CDI kits.
Can I have my own curve.
How can you say the same curve will work on different setups.
Ans: The curve we use has been developed with a lot of effort and is as such only available on special request. When your placing your order you can ask for a copy. Or you can mail us what kind of curve you want and we will burn it onto the CDI.
About the same same curve working for diffirent RDs and setups. Its actually quite simple. The basic design allows you to move your curve around simply by rotating the brass coil plate.
Why the delay in shipping.
It is our best intention to have ever kit ordered shipped out within a week of receiving the order. With the launch of the new Digital CDI we have been flooded with orders. We are trying our best to ramp up production. Till then all orders ship on a first in first out basis. The more we scale up production the more the number or orders pouring in goes up. This is compounded by the fact that we are releasing new Ignitions for other bikes and markets also.
Why isnt my headlight coming on.
Ans: Please understand that quite a few things are different in this bike. Firstly the bike is magneto based. And hence the headlight will only come on when the engine is spinning and the magneto is producing power. If you don't like this you can re-wire it to run off your battery.
What bulb should I use.
Ans: You can run anything from a 35/35 to a 90/100. I have found that running a 60/80 gives the best performance.
